WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – Utah’s second largest municipality is taking the next step in building a vibrant city center. Wednesday, the community gathered for a foundation ceremony, as a large new hotel – and critical anchor of West Valley City’s ‘New Downtown’ district – went vertical.
Now in development by Provo-based PEG Companies (PEG), SpringHill Suites West Valley City will add an upscale hospitality option to the area. The five-story hotel with 133 spacious suites will feature mobile check-in services, in-room work spaces, spa-like bathrooms, and complimentary wi-fi, breakfast, and fitness center access. Project leaders from Provo-based commercial real estate developer PEG Companies aim to bring new business travelers to West Valley City through the hotel’s convenient collection of amenities, especially as new office buildings go up in the area.
The 1.1-acre hotel property, located on the east side of Valley Fair Mall and adjacent to I-215, was previously an under-utilized parking area that the mall sold to PEG to redevelop, with the intent of revitalizing the area.
“When the mall approached us with interest in developing a new hotel, we understood their vision and jumped at the opportunity to be part of that exciting transformation.” said Todd Stone, Development Manager at PEG.
“The potential for increased traffic from the hotel is key to driving sales to the rest of the property,” said Dewey Richardson, General Manager of Valley Fair Mall.
Since the early 1970’s, Valley Fair Mall has served as a staple in the community. In 2004, West Valley City adopted The City Center Redevelopment Project, which enabled the renovation of the mall two years later. Today, the 40-acre project area encompassing several blocks south of 3500 South and west of Constitution Boulevard is known as Fairbourne Station. The long-term development undertaking will become the only mixed-use development in Utah that has within its footprint a City Hall, public library, police department and courthouse. The project will also include nearly 25,000 SF of additional retail, several Class-A office buildings, a public plaza, green space, and on-site UTA hub, with many other surrounding projects including multifamily housing and this SpringHill Suites West Valley City hotel.
According to West Valley City Mayor Ron Bigelow, the SpringHill Suites hotel represents the first of many upcoming milestones for the city and stands to usher in a new era for the City’s ‘New Downtown.’
“This will give visitors another option for staying in West Valley City where they can take advantage of all of the activities that Fairbourne Station has to offer now – restaurants, entertainment, shopping, transportation, and parks – and in the future as development continues,” Mayor Bigelow said.
As part of the Foundation Ceremony, project partners and city dignitaries signed their names on the first column of the hotel to go vertical, before crews hoisted it into place.
SpringHill Suites West Valley City is scheduled to open November 2020.
